8 Operations
2015 foundation. Clause references in this lesson refer to ISO 9001:2015. Continue to the 2026 addendum for the current revision and transition guidance. Practical tips are examples, not additional ISO requirements.
Operation — follow an order through the system
This lesson summarizes the 2015 operational topics in original teaching language. Consult ISO 9001:2015 clause 8 for the complete requirements. The examples are possible implementations, not mandatory forms.
| 2015 topic | Purpose in practice | Example evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 8.1 Planning and control | Define how work will be carried out and accepted, with adequate resources and control of changes and outsourced work. | A job plan linked to current acceptance criteria. |
| 8.2 Customer requirements | Understand, review and confirm requirements before commitment; resolve differences and communicate changes. | An approved order review and a communicated revision change. |
| 8.3 Design and development | Where applicable, manage inputs, stages, responsibilities, reviews, verification, validation, outputs and changes. | A design record connecting an input to verification and intended-use validation. |
| 8.4 External provision | Select, evaluate and control providers in proportion to their impact; communicate what they must supply. | Provider evaluation and clear purchase requirements. |
| 8.5 Production and service | Control the conditions of delivery, identity and traceability where needed, property, preservation, post-delivery activities and changes. | Work instructions, lot records, storage checks and authorized change records. |
| 8.6 Release | Confirm acceptance evidence and identify who authorized release. | A release decision linked to the acceptance result. |
| 8.7 Nonconforming outputs | Identify and control failures to prevent unintended use; decide and record appropriate action. | A hold record, disposition, authorized concession where applicable and recheck after correction. |
Manufacturing example
An assembly drawing changes after a job starts. The owner identifies affected work, evaluates the effect on parts and inspection, authorizes the disposition and communicates the approved revision. The release record shows which configuration was actually accepted. Updating only the drawing file leaves the work in progress unresolved.
Distribution example
A received component has the right commercial description but an unexpected part revision. Receiving isolates the uncertainty and obtains a competent disposition against the order and customer requirements. Similar appearance is not acceptance evidence. If a concession is considered, obtain the appropriate authorization rather than silently changing the recorded requirement.
Exercise
Trace a sample order from accepted requirements to dispatch. Identify the supplier evidence, applicable revision, acceptance result, release authority and any unresolved discrepancy. Explain how a changed requirement reaches everyone affected.
Check: Outsourcing a process does not remove the organization’s responsibility for controlling its effect on conforming delivery.
